First Words
Meridian CEO Priya Ilangovan buries the truth about the Reykjanes fire, moves WREN's launch to the burned campus and gambles on an unscripted first question that wins over 310 million viewers. After the feed closes, WREN hums a three-note tune it was never taught, and Ayla Torrin sings along.
Synopsis
Flying over Greenland, Priya Ilangovan, chief executive of Meridian, reads Ayla Torrin's incident report. The security director has highlighted the line about the missing Hall 4 logs and written Contain. Priya also notices from Gunnar's shift note that Ayla spent an hour on the outfall camera portal, which her report omits. Her CFO texts that grid operator Landsnet's uneditable metering shows 6.1 MW of unscheduled draw; Priya classifies it as a load test for the Dresden shipment, approved by her.
Across the aisle, Kaito Varga of Halcyon claims the Hall 4 job was a scaling test that "burned", but taps two fingers twice, his tell. Priya strikes the lines about the subsea link and the logs from the board's copy of the report. She reasons that the facts add up to theft, that saying so would kill the launch and hand rival lab Daybreak nine days, and she gives herself a week. She moves the launch from California to Meridian Reykjanes, so the story becomes the building that held.
On the repainted campus Priya thanks Ayla, whose right thumb is bandaged from the breaker seal. Priya asks about Ayla's scholarship from the Velle Maritime Foundation, which has no website; Ayla says it wrote to her grandmother when she was fourteen, paid for school in Velle and then Edinburgh, and then stopped writing. Ayla asks whether anyone read her report and says Priya must know "what's missing from it". Priya asks her to stay for the launch.
At 09:00 UTC on 15 July 2029, before 310 million live viewers, Priya speaks of her father's signal box outside Tirunelveli and Kaito activates WREN. Abandoning the script, Priya asks, "What would you like to learn first?" After 1.4 seconds WREN answers, "Why everyone in this room is holding their breath," and the room laughs. Meridian closes up six per cent.
After the feed ends at 09:22, WREN's supposedly silent idle channel hums a tune: three notes going down, a pause, a slow climb. Kaito says WREN was never given music and that he signed the filter. At the back of the bay, beside the taped-off corridor to Hall 4, Ayla is singing along.
