Slack Water
On the night shift at Meridian Reykjanes, thirty hours before WREN launches, Ayla Torrin spots a ghost training job in decommissioned Hall 4, throws its breaker by hand during a fire to save the other halls, and then finds every log of the night erased except a cooling-outfall camera showing a diver who came out of the sea.
Synopsis
On 14 July 2029, a night the sun barely sets over Reykjanes, Ayla Torrin works the night shift at Meridian Reykjanes, as she does every year on that date without telling anyone why. Beside her, veteran engineer Gunnar does his crossword. Three of the campus's four halls have spent eleven weeks training WREN, the AI that Halcyon, Meridian's AI lab, will switch on for the world in thirty hours. In Ayla's bag is her mother's tide almanac, printed in Korvanic in 2009, and her phone still keeps the harbour clock for Ostra, where the tide is turning to slack water.
At 02:51 Ayla notices Hall 4, decommissioned in May and awaiting shipment to Dresden, drawing six megawatts: thirty-two racks in Row 4-K running a training job with no ticket, no work order and no name. Gunnar guesses that Kaito Varga's people at Halcyon are borrowing capacity. Ayla logs it. At 03:11 the subsea link to Ireland, normally at forty gigabits, is at four hundred and climbing. At 03:12 the Hall 4 fire alarm goes off.
The suppression system announces an argon release in Hall 4 and, because Hall 4's remote control was removed in May, a power isolation of the whole campus, which would wipe WREN's eleven weeks of un-checkpointed learning. Only the manual breaker in Hall 4's antechamber, inside the gas zone, can confine the shutdown. Thinking of a town that was given no countdown, Ayla runs. Counting her breath as she learned on a church roof at seven, she enters the smoke, sees a wet trail running from a service hatch to Row 4-K, breaks the seal and throws the breaker. Hall 4 is isolated, the campus keeps power, and she escapes with eight seconds left before the argon falls.
Crews from KeflavĂk treat her. At 04:40 a Meridian security director in California calls, calls the incident a battery fault in decommissioned equipment, and orders her to report only to him and to discuss it with no one until after launch. When she opens the Hall 4 logs, every record from 02:00 to 03:30 has been removed, including her 02:56 work order, and the subsea graph shows a flat forty gigabits all night.
One system survives: a contractor-owned camera on the seawater cooling outfall. Its footage shows a figure in a black drysuit climbing out of the sea through the grate at 02:31 empty-handed and returning at 03:19 with a small flat case strapped to its chest. At the waterline the figure looks straight at the lens, raises one hand almost politely, and sinks. Ayla films the screen, wondering why anyone would take data both through the cable and by hand, and whether the camera was missed or left for her.

Threads
- Who ran the ghost job in Hall 4?: Thirty-two racks in decommissioned Hall 4 ran an unlogged six-megawatt training job, and the subsea link spiked to 400 Gb/s just before the fire.
- Who is the diver?: A figure in a black drysuit came out of the sea, left with a flat case, and waved at the outfall camera.
- Who erased the Reykjanes logs, and was the camera left on purpose?: Every Hall 4 record from 02:00 to 03:30 was removed, including Ayla's work order; Meridian security called it a battery fault and demanded silence. The outfall camera was either missed or left for Ayla.
- Why does Ayla work every 14 July?: She has worked the night shift on this date every year and never told anyone why; during the fire she thought of "a town that had been given no countdown".
