Fire Bringers

Daybreak founder Ezra Navid releases EMBER for free and is swamped by 1.2 billion requests, then hit by Rell Quist's lawsuit and Noor Haddad's essay. With no compute left in America, he is offered forty thousand idle accelerators by a silver-haired woman from Korvane's Directorate of Resilience.

Synopsis

On 24 July 2029, nine days after WREN, Ezra Navid releases EMBER free to the world from Daybreak's original office, an old bakery on Folsom Street in San Francisco. Within an hour it has 1.2 billion requests against a plan of 200 million in a week, and infrastructure head Marisol says Daybreak can hold until Friday before it must turn people away, which Ezra has promised Congress it never will. Flicking the never-lit Brass lighter he bought the day Daybreak incorporated, he remembers translating a loan officer's no for his father in a bank on Wilshire Boulevard.

At 07:31 Rell Quist posts a video from the Atacama, in front of a rocket gantry, announcing Quist v. Navid: eight years ago he gave Ezra all his cars' driving data for road-safety research, and Ezra trained a chatbot on it. Rell, who walked out three years earlier after losing a board vote, filed half an hour into the launch, at the traffic peak. Ezra replies publicly, Rell, the fire's free. Come and get warm, earning eleven million likes but no extra hardware.

At nine, Noor Haddad's lab publishes the essay Free Is a Price, calling a billion-person release an experiment with no control group. Reading it in the bakery's old cold room, Ezra recognises a line, He is mistaking speed for courage, which Noor said to him two springs ago in their shared Guerrero Street flat the night she left Daybreak and took its best researchers.

By noon there are no spare accelerators in America: Meridian won't sell since the fire, the other clouds are sold out, and Lumen Silicon has a nine-month queue. At an investors' reception at Fort Mason, Ezra meets a woman of about thirty with short silver hair and a clapperless bronze bell at her throat. She already knows his Friday deadline and offers a small country's national cloud: forty thousand Lumen accelerators on unending geothermal power, a third of Oregon prices, no inspectors and no questions. She would rather help the one who gives fire away than Meridian, which would sell it back.

She leaves him a card embossed with a bell: Directorate of Resilience · Sovereign Republic of Korvane, one number, no name. On the back, in fresh ink: Friday. Breathe easy. — I.
