Cradle
On launch day for Condor 7 in the Atacama, Rell Quist hides a heart arrhythmia and asks Mae Tsao of Lumen Silicon for sixty thousand chips. At T-minus ninety seconds Jun Tsao holds the count over a second, unregistered signing key on a Lumen flight computer; Rell, remembering Benjamín Soto, scrubs. That night an anonymous message says: "We know what you overrode."
Synopsis
Before dawn on 29 July 2029 at the Ascendant Launch Complex in the Atacama, Rell Quist climbs the gantry beside the ninety-metre Condor 7 and has an episode of irregular heartbeat: nine rattles, counted while he walks a Red stone across his knuckles. His father died on a staircase in Antofagasta at fifty-two with the same rattle; Rell is fifty. He silences his watch's arrhythmia alert and touches the rocket, as he does before every flight.
In the control room, guidance engineer Jun Tsao, twenty-eight and the only person who has told Rell no and kept his job, notices how long he was up the tower. Jun's mother, Mae Tsao, founder of Lumen Silicon, has flown in from Singapore. She chides Rell over suing Ezra and over the sixty thousand chips he wants by Christmas, calling him Aurelio. Rell wants to build what Daybreak was meant to be: open weights nobody owns and nobody can switch off, "and spite". Mae reveals that EMBER began serving on Friday night from a country she has never sold to, on silicon only Lumen makes, and she doesn't remember the sale. Rell has a second episode and holds his wrist down; Mae sees.
The count runs clean until T-minus 90 seconds, when Jun calls a hold: flight computer two is signed both by Lumen and by a second key that is valid but not in any registry and was not there on the bench. Rell argues it is just a flag on a working board, with the window closing in nineteen minutes, and reaches for the brass override key. He remembers Stand Two five years ago, when Benjamín Soto said hold and Rell said clear it. Mae reads the screen and her face goes still at the second key. "It's your rocket." Rell scrubs.
Mae leaves before eight, promising to pull the board herself and saying some of her engineers have too much time on their hands; she tells Rell to find a better habit than holding his wrist. Rell thanks Jun "for not moving". That night in his trailer, his private phone, which holds only nine numbers, receives a message from a sender of all zeros: Benjamín Soto. We know what you overrode.
